Newish (Original) Vampire. Not Dead, and sane unless you're playing from a specific canon point, or we're doing a PSL set at some particular point in canon.
The short version: History teacher, vampire hunter, believes he is widowed after he sees his wife, Isobel, a paranormal psychologist, drained by Damon. Finds out he didn't kill her, but turned her - at her request. Originally wants revenge, eventually becomes Damon's best (only) friend. He sticks around Mystic Falls, helping to protect Elena and the town, with and from a bunch of vampires.
He does a good impression of a harmless, affable, idiot. Can actually kick quite a bit of ass when he (decides he) needs to. Has way, way more courage than sense.

Default canon point is just before the end of S4, and mildly AU.
